The United States is one of the largest countries on Earth. It is a diverse and fascinating land. Each state within the United States is unique and holds treasures within it that are particular to it alone. The histories, cultures and people of each state are varied, too. To give students an insight to that diversity and richness, classroom teachers in every state in nearly every 4th, 5th or 6th grade are asked to teach about the U.S. This book aids in that teaching process. This book is divided into 51 units, including each state and the District of Columbia. Within that unit, students are given "Fun Facts" about the state. These include the origins of the state's name, as well, as a list of the items the state has designated to represent the state such as, the state motto, nickname, bird, tree or flower. In many cases, states have also named state amphibians, rocks, dinosaurs and insects. In most cases, the students are given the common name, as well as, the scientific name. In the second part of the "Fun Facts" section, other important facts are listed in an almanac style, so the students have information about the state at their fingertips, such as the date the state achieved statehood and its order of admission to the Union. The state's population, area, highest and lowest points are also listed. The state capital and the state's largest city are also listed. Last in this section is a brief of the state's major crops and industry. In a section called "Did You Know?" things of interest within in the state are highlighted. These range from the history of Jell-O to the invention of the parking meter. Always fun and fascinating! Each state flag and state seal is described and pictured and a list of famous people born in the state are listed, too. They include the person's name, birth and death dates, what they are best known for and his or her birthplace. These include scientists, entertainers, Presidents and politicians. Lastly, each unit has a craft for the students to do. These can be done by individual students or by the entire class. Each craft is different and tailored to teach the students something unique about the state's history, people, geography or culture. As the students work their way through the pages and activities of this book, they will discover and uncover fun and fascinating facts about the United States and its people and places. Let the journey begin! p.b., 240 pgs.
